Railways

1850 - 1900

The Stockton & Darlington Railway is considered the world’s first public railway for transporting passengers and goods using a steam locomotive. It began operation on 27 September 1825 and its tracks connected the coal mines in Shildon, Great Britain, with the towns of Darlington and Stockton-on-Tees. It was around 40 km long.

What place better reflects a country’s spirit, its people’s state of mind, its problems, than a station?

The first railway to operate in Switzerland was the extension of the French line from Strasbourg to Basel in 1844. However, it was not until 1847 that Switzerland built its first domestic line to cover the 16 km between Zurich and Baden.
